Piles, medically known as hemorrhoids, are swollen and enlarged blood vessels and supporting tissues in or around the anus and lower rectum. They are common and can cause symptoms such as bright-red bleeding after bowel movements, itching, irritation, swelling, discomfort or a lump around the anus.
Why do piles happen?
Constipation and repeated straining during bowel movements can increase pressure in the anorectal area. A low-fibre diet, prolonged sitting on the toilet, pregnancy, excess body weight and some bowel-habit problems may also contribute. Not every person with rectal bleeding has piles, so persistent bleeding should be medically assessed.
Common symptoms:
What can help?
The first step for many people is to keep stools soft and avoid straining. Increase fibre through vegetables, fruits, whole grains and other fibre-rich foods. Drink adequate fluids according to your health needs, stay physically active and avoid sitting on the toilet for longer than necessary. Warm sitz baths may provide temporary comfort for some patients.
When is medical treatment needed?
If symptoms continue, keep returning or are severe, a doctor can examine the area and decide whether medicines, an office procedure or surgery is appropriate. The choice depends on the type and severity of hemorrhoids. Laser treatment may be suitable for selected patients, but it is not automatically the best option for everyone.
When should you see a doctor?
Repeated rectal bleeding, severe pain, a new lump, unexplained weight loss, fever or symptoms that do not improve deserve medical evaluation. Rectal bleeding should not automatically be assumed to be piles.
When Should You Consult a Doctor?
If you experience persistent rectal bleeding, acute severe pain during bowel movements, swelling, or unexplained fever, please seek immediate consultation. Early diagnosis ensures simple, non-invasive or laser-guided treatment.
